/setup and the Setup assistant

This guide walks you through the essentials for a new server, one step at a time, in eight steps. In Discord, open it with /setup. On the web dashboard, open it with the 'Setup assistant'. The steps and their order are the same in both places.

StepWhat you set
1. Main languageThe language of bot names and messages
2. Text channelsWhich text channels to read
3. How the bot joinsAuto-join and the voice channels to join automatically
4. Reading optionsTurn common reading features on or off
5. VoiceServer default voice, Lock voice
6. PermissionsPeople and roles to make managers, separating guests
7. BotsAdd bots that aren't in the server yet
8. FinishCheck what you set

All our bots, such as Yeonhong and Yeonha, share the settings you choose here. Once you set them, every bot reads the same way no matter which one joins.

In a server where Yeonhong is newly invited, a language question is posted first, and the server owner gets one DM pointing them to /setup. → If you just invited the bot Servers that already had Yeonhong get neither. Those servers can also set things in order, starting from the main language, with /setup or the Setup assistant.

Who can use it

At first, only admins can use it. On the Permissions tab, you can open /setup and 'Dashboard server settings' to managers as well.

/setup in Discord

Type /setup and a window that only you can see opens. The current step is shown at the top of the window, like Setup · 3/8 How the bot joins. Only the person who opened the window can press its buttons.

Buttons

ButtonWhat it does
[Next]Saves what you picked in this step and goes to the next step
[Skip]Goes to the next step without changing this one
[Back]Discards what you picked in this step and goes to the previous step
[Done]Closes the window at the last step

Pressing buttons inside a step doesn't save anything until you press [Next]. Step 7, 'Add more bots', has nothing to pick, so it has no [Skip].

Call it again to pick up where you left off

The window stays open for 10 minutes, then closes. If you call /setup again, it continues from the last step you were on, with the values you saved up to then. On a server that has finished all eight steps, calling it again starts from the beginning.

Shown in three languages

The 'Main language' question in step 1 is shown in 한국어, English and 日本語 at once. That's because the person choosing might not be able to read the current display language.

  • Press a language button and the window switches to that language right away.
  • Press [Next] and the main language is saved. The names of all our bots in this server change to that language.
  • From the next step on, the guide uses the language you picked.
  • You set a different language for each channel on the dashboard's Language tab.

If some bots couldn't be renamed, you're told with "Couldn't change the nickname of". Those bots need the 'Change Nickname' permission.

What you pick in each step

2. Text channels Choose between [All text channels] and [Only chosen channels]. If you choose [Only chosen channels], pick channels one at a time to add them. Picking a channel you already chose removes it. The channel where /join was used is always read. The channels you choose here are read when a bot joins automatically.

3. How the bot joins When you call with /join, an idle bot comes in any time. Here you decide whether to also turn on 'Auto-join'. If you turn on auto-join, you can choose the voice channels to join automatically. If you don't choose any, the bot joins any voice channel.

4. Reading options Turn the features below on or off. The rest of the reading features are on the dashboard's Reading tab.

  • Only read people in the voice channel
  • Read the writer's name
  • Announce people joining and leaving
  • Read at the same time
  • Split left and right (shown only when Read at the same time is on)

5. Voice Pick the server default voice from the voice list for the main language. The list shows up to 25 voices at a time. For more voices, press [More on the dashboard] to open the 'Server default voice' row on the dashboard's Voices tab directly. In the same step, you can also turn 'Lock voice' on or off. What it changes is explained on the Voices tab.

6. Permissions Pick people or roles to make managers, one at a time. Picking one again removes it. If you turn on 'Separate guests', pick the roles that count as users. To set the level for each command, press [Set per command in the dashboard] to go to the dashboard's Permissions tab.

WARNING

If you separate guests without picking any user role, [Next] is blocked. Saving it that way would make everyone who isn't a manager a guest, and they couldn't even use /join.

7. Add more bots Shows whether each of our bots is in this server. You can invite a missing bot right away with its 'Add ○○' button. The more bots you have, the more voice channels you can use at the same time. The invite screen opens with this server already selected, so you don't need to pick the server.

8. Finish Shows the language, text channels, how the bot joins, reading options, voice, managers and number of bots all at once. Press [Open dashboard] to open this server's server settings on the dashboard.

The dashboard Setup assistant

Press [Setup assistant] at the top of the server settings screen on the dashboard to open its window. On a phone, it slides up from the bottom of the screen.

If the main language isn't set yet

A notice saying "New here? Set everything up at once with the setup guide." appears at the very top of the server settings screen.

  • Press [Open the guide] to open the Setup assistant.
  • Press [Maybe later] and it won't show again for this server. This only applies to the browser you're using now.

Step 6People and roles to make managersRoles to make managers (people are on the Permissions tab)
Step 7Add missing botsBot list, [Invite], [Check permissions]

Everything is saved at once at the end

Nothing changes until you press [Save]. The voice you picked in the Choose a voice window is saved at the same time.

The last 'Review' step shows only what will change, like this:

text
Channels to read All text channels → #general
Auto-join Off → On
Lock voice Off → On

The bottom of the window shows how many things will change so far, like '3 changes'. If nothing changes, [Save] can't be pressed.

When you save, you see "Settings saved". If you changed the language and some bots couldn't be renamed, you're told the names of those bots and that they need the 'Change Nickname' permission.

NOTE

Saving happens in several parts. If one part fails along the way, it stops there and tells you how far it got. You can change the remaining parts directly on the server settings screen.

Closing the window

If you've picked something and press [Close], you're asked once: "Close without saving your choices?" Press [Keep choosing] to go back, or [Close without saving] to discard your choices.

WARNING

If you changed something on the server settings screen and haven't pressed [Apply] yet, the first step of the assistant tells you how many such changes there are. Saving in the assistant discards those changes. Apply or revert them on the server settings screen first, then open the assistant.
