Soundboard — type a word, hear a sound

The soundboard is a feature that plays a sound effect you've set up when someone types a chosen word in chat. Once a server admin adds 'word and sound' pairs, messages with that word aren't read. Only the sound plays.

NOTE

This page covers playing sounds that are already set up from chat, which anyone in the server can do. Adding and removing words and sound files is done by server admins on the dashboard → Words & sounds tab

How to use it

text
airhorn

If one of the words set up is airhorn, the sound plays in the voice channel as soon as you send this. This message isn't read.

text
ok that was a total airhorn moment

It still works when the word is mixed into a sentence. If the word is in the message as one piece separated by spaces, the sound plays, and this whole message isn't read either.

WARNING

The soundboard comes before reading. If the message has even one of the words, the sentence isn't read. You can't play a sound and have the sentence read at the same time. If a long sentence you wrote ended with just a sound, one of the words was mixed into it. Take that word out and send it again.

Seeing which words there are

The old /server soundboard_list command is gone. The word list is under 'Sounds' on the dashboard's 'Server settings' › 'Words & sounds' tab.

Only that server's admins can open the dashboard's server settings (on some servers, managers can too). If you want to know which words there are, ask a server admin.

When the sound plays

Matching a word is very simple. The bot splits the message at spaces and only checks whether any of the pieces has exactly the same characters as a word that's set up.

Word set upIf you writeDoes the sound play?
airhornairhornYes
airhornok that was a total airhorn momentYes
airhornairhorn!No. With ! attached, it's a different piece
airhornairhornairhornNo. Stuck together, it's a different piece
airhorn// airhornNo. Messages that start with // are skipped
ggGGNo. Uppercase and lowercase are treated as different

There are three things to remember.

  • A partial match doesn't count. The word has to match the whole piece.
  • No punctuation attached. airhorn! is a different piece from airhorn.
  • Uppercase and lowercase are checked as written.

The check is based on exactly what you typed. A sound never plays because text changed by 'Reduce spam' or 'Abbreviation reading' happens to match a word.

Even if a message has several of the words, only one sound plays.

For the sound to play

The soundboard goes through the same conditions as reading a message. If any one of them blocks it, no sound plays.

ConditionWhat to check
The bot is in a voice channelCheck that you can see the bot in the voice channel
The server has the soundboard onIt's on by default. An admin may have turned it off
It's the chat the bot is assigned toIt has to be the chat the bot reads messages from
You're not in 'People not to read'If you're on that list, no sound plays either
Your message doesn't start with //Messages that start with // skip the soundboard too
You meet the server's reading conditionsIf the server has set 'Roles to read' or a 'Message prefix', you have to meet those too
You're in the voice channelOn a server with 'Read outside the voice channel' off, you have to be in the same voice channel as the bot

Messages written by bots don't trigger the soundboard. The reading conditions are explained in detail in How the bot reads.

Playback order

Soundboard sounds wait in the same line as sentences to be read. If sentences are queued ahead of it, the sound plays after they're done.

Each server can have up to 20 items waiting at once. If chat gets busy and the line fills up, soundboard sounds can be dropped too, and no notice appears.

/skip skips only the sound playing now. To clear everything that's queued, remove the bot with /leave. → Voice channel commands

Your settings aren't used

The soundboard plays the sound you set up exactly as it is. It doesn't generate a voice, so neither personal nor server settings come into it.

SettingUsed for the soundboard?
Your voice · pitch · speedNo
Server default voice · volumeNo
Custom voiceNo
CreditsNo. The soundboard doesn't use credits

Even if a sound is too loud or too quiet, there's no way to change it when it plays. An admin has to add it again with a file at the right volume.

Troubleshooting

TIP

The sentence is read instead of the sound. The word didn't match exactly. Ask an admin to check the exact characters set up, and check that no punctuation is attached and that it isn't stuck to other characters before or after.

WARNING

You typed the word, but no sound plays and the sentence isn't read either. In this case the bot skips the message without a notice, so you can't tell why just by looking at the screen. If it happens with just one word, ask an admin to delete that word and add it again. If it happens with every word, please contact us on the official server.

TIP

An old sound plays. If the old sound keeps playing even after it was added again under the same name, ask an admin to add it again under a different name.
