Words & sounds tab

This tab decides how words in messages are changed before reading, and which words play a sound. How to open it and how [Apply] works are covered in A tour of the dashboard's server settings.

Names in parentheses are the names used in the old Discord /server settings. You can search by those names too.

Abbreviations and spam

Korean chat often uses chosung, the initial consonants of syllables, as abbreviations. For example, ㅋㅋ is laughter, like "lol". These settings control how such abbreviations and repeated characters are read.

SettingWhat it doesDefault
Abbreviation reading (Word Replacement)Reads abbreviations like 'ㅋㅋ' as words, like '크크'. 'Word Replacement' below also needs this onOn
Built-in abbreviations (Korean Dictionary)Common abbreviations use a built-in dictionaryOn
Reduce spam (Anti-Spam)When the same character repeats, reads only up to the 'Spam threshold'On
Spam thresholdHow many repeats of the same character to read5

Abbreviation reading and Built-in abbreviations

'Abbreviation reading' is the switch that turns both 'Word Replacement' and 'Built-in abbreviations' on this tab on or off.

SwitchWhat needs it on
Abbreviation readingBoth the server's Word Replacement list and Built-in abbreviations
Built-in abbreviationsBuilt-in abbreviations only
  • Built-in abbreviations are managed by Studio Yeonhong. You can't change their contents per server, only turn them on or off.
  • If 'Abbreviation reading' is off, 'Built-in abbreviations' isn't used even when it's on. It also looks faded on screen.
  • The server's Word Replacement list is applied first, then Built-in abbreviations.

Reduce spam and Spam threshold

When the same character repeats more times than the 'Spam threshold', only up to the threshold is read. It doesn't delete or block messages. It only shortens what's read.

Spam thresholdMessage writtenMessage read
5ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ (unchanged)
5ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
3ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
  • Set the spam threshold from 3 to 10. Servers that set it to 1 or 2 in the past are read with 3.
  • If 'Reduce spam' is off, changing the spam threshold has no effect. Messages are read as they are.

Word Replacement

These are reading rules used only on this server. When the word on the left appears, it's read as the word on the right. In Korean it's named after chosung, but it isn't limited to them. You can have any word read as any other word.

Adding and removing rules

  1. In 'Word to replace', enter the word to change, like ㅎㄱ.
  2. In 'Read as', enter how it should be read, like 합격 ("passed").
  3. Press [Add].

Each rule has a [Delete] button. Rules are saved as soon as you add or delete them. If there are no rules yet, you see 'No rules yet'.

WARNING

If you add a 'Word to replace' that already exists, no new rule is created. Instead, its 'Read as' is replaced with the new value. To go back to the old value, you have to enter the old value again. Before adding, scan the list for the same word.

Things to know when making rules

WARNING

If rules overlap, the result may not be the same every time. The order in which server rules are applied isn't fixed. If you add both ㅇㅋ → 오케이 ("okay") and ㅋ → 크, the result could be '오케이' or 'ㅇ크'. Make sure one rule's 'Word to replace' isn't contained in another rule's 'Word to replace'. One-character rules overlap especially easily.

  • 'Word to replace' is matched exactly as written. Symbols like . * [ have no special meaning and match those characters themselves.
  • Words with spaces can be replaced too. You can even have a whole sentence read as a different sentence.
  • Don't put another rule's 'Word to replace' inside 'Read as'. The replaced word can match another rule and be changed again.
  • Mentions can't be used as a 'Word to replace'. They've already become '○○ was mentioned' before Word Replacement is applied.
  • Links are removed after Word Replacement is applied. A rule that replaces a link with other words works, but links that aren't replaced aren't read.

Soundboard

SettingWhat it doesDefault
SoundboardPlays a sound when someone writes the set wordOn
SoundsPlays the sound when this exact word appears in chatEmpty

What you used to do with the old /server soundboard_add and /server soundboard_remove is now done here. The explanation from a user's point of view is in Soundboard.

Uploading a sound

  1. In 'Trigger word', enter the word to use in chat. You can enter up to 40 characters.
  2. Pick a sound file with [Choose file]. If you left the word empty, it's filled in with the file name.
  3. Press [Upload].
RequirementValueIf not met
File typemp3, ogg, wav"Only mp3, ogg, and wav files can be uploaded"
File sizeUp to 8MB"Up to 8MB"
  • The word can't contain spaces. If you type a space, it turns into _.
  • Each uploaded sound has [Play sound] and [Delete]. Sounds are saved as soon as you upload or delete them.

When the sound plays

The sound plays when one of the words in a message, split by spaces, is exactly the same as the 'Trigger word'.

  • Uppercase and lowercase are treated as different.
  • Punctuation attached before or after the word stops it from matching. If you added 짠 ("ta-da"), 짠! won't play the sound.
  • A message that plays a sound isn't read.
  • Bot messages don't play sounds.
  • Messages from 'People not to read' don't play sounds either.
  • The message has to be in the text channel the bot is reading in a voice channel.

WARNING

Don't use common words as trigger words. If you add a frequently used word like ㅋ or 네 ("yes"), messages containing it only play the sound and aren't read. It can look as if reading has stopped. If only messages with a certain word aren't being read, check whether that word is in the Sounds list.
